Senator Joan Ballweg (R-Markesan) Spring Listening Sessions
Senate District 14: (Map Link) consists of Waupaca, Green Lake, Marquette and Adams Counties, along with parts of Columbia, Fond du Lac, Sauk, Dane and Dodge County.
Town Hall Meetings, Listening Sessions, In District Office Hours and/or Mobile Office hours are an excellent time to meet with your elected officials one on one. No matter what they call them or label these events, they are your opportunity to either start or continue to build a relationship with your elected officials. Always remember to bring something of value to the table and if you can, bring other constituents from the district that support your issue with you. If you plan to attend and need background information and/or talking points or are reporting the results of your meeting you can always contact me directly.
Now finding out about these ‘events’ is the hardest part. With no uniformity in the legislature, some reps put out info in emails. That is where I found Senator Ballweg listening session notice. Here email adds: “Join me for one of my spring listening sessions. I will travel across the 14th Senate District and join some of my Assembly counterparts to hear from you about important legislation and provisions in the budget. Keep an eye out for additional dates and times! “
If you do attend and Ballweg says she is “working on medical marijuana reform with someone in her district”, that is me and by “working” she means when I pin her down to talk about it with me she will. She has never co-sponsored any legislation and the ideas I presented to her have not formulated in her authoring legislation either.
Now that one of the Assembly Reps (Dallman) in her Senate district supported decriminalization on the campaign trail and one of the Assembly Reps (Plumer) in her Senate District co-sponsored a medical marijuana bill, will she emerge this session as a leader? Oh yeah, she sits on the JFC also (Joint Finance Committee) which has stated they will remove marijuana reform from the 2021-23 budget, just like the Republicans did in 2019.
Some elected officials post and create events on facebook or other social media and some submit press releases. Point is, learn who your Senator and Assembly Representative is and following them on social media and subscribe to their email alerts!
