AD 5 Sampson (D) to challenge Goeben (R)

| | | |

Assembly District 5 slightly changed under the redistricting process and map process. Primarily the Little Chute, Seymour, Hobart, Nichols, Oneida and the Oneida Reservation area.

Goeben (R – Hobart)

Incumbent first elected in 2022. Owner of Joyful Hearts Family Childcare, YWCA swim team board member, Christ Alone Church Leadership board member, Green Bay Area Christian Homeschoolers board member.

2022 Campaign Statement from Goeben: I support medical marijuana and would like to see more research to find areas where it would be helpful and in what areas it is not effective. I am a strong supporter of veterans and have looked into the benefits of medical marijuana on mental health conditions such as PTSD, insomnia, depression, and anxiety. I understand that there is a trend where marijuana is being substituted for other drugs which can allow for improvements in overall health. Medical professionals should have access to the tools they need to help their patients, marijuana is one of those tools. I am still researching the use of recreational marijuana. While I am a strong supporter of personal freedom, I want to carefully consider the issue because I do not want to introduce or support legislation that will cause harm.

During her first term in office Goeben did not author or co-sponsor any legislation to reform the cannabis laws in Wisconsin. She did tell me that “I am running again for the 5th. I still support medical use. I did not support the bill put forth by assembly Republicans this past session. I do not think state dispensaries are an acceptable option.

We highly expect her to run. She could surely secure victory by promising to help legalization efforts if re-elected and be a leader in The Wisconsin Cannabis Caucus.

Current state law requires incumbents who do not plan to seek re-election to file a declaration with the Wisconsin Elections Commission that formally affirms that they will not seek re-election two weeks before the deadline to file nomination papers. The deadline for 2024 is May 24th.

Sampson (D – Little Chute)

Greg Sampson had this to say about his stance on marijuana: “It is safe for me to say that I support the legalization of cannabis in WI. For both recreational and medical use. We are losing revenue by the day.

I am very partial to candidates that like to fish and think marijuana should be legal. Last year I did a #365dayfishingchallenge and posted most my catches on my personal Facebook Page and Instagram. Check out what Greg Sampson caught and stop over at his campaign facebook page and say high.

I will provide you additional 2024 Wisconsin State Election coverage throughout the campaign season. This next election is extremely important for marijuana reform and I will continue to bring you information as more candidates make their political moves.

In the event that we end up with divided government in the 2024-25 legislation session, the official formation of The Wisconsin Cannabis Caucus would be a must first step towards reform. The official establishment of this Caucus will represent the growing, bipartisan support in Wisconsin.

Although session as ended we still urge you to contact your elected officials. The top four action alerts are still functionable on The Wisconsin Cannabis Activist Action Network for you immediate use.
