AD 82 Allen (R), Reilly (D) vs D’Amico (D)
Assembly District 82 is 57.5% favored Republican District and the new maps did not disrupt much of Incumbent Rep. Scott Allen and his plans to run again for the state assembly. Two potential Democrat challengers could produce a primary. Although very likely a Republican win, this race is at least on the watch screen of 29 competitive assembly races in Wisconsin.
Scott Allen (R – Waukesha)
Back in 2014 Scott Allen won a five (5) way Republican Primary by 288 votes and 39% of the vote in an election that saw 5192 votes cast. In 2018 and 2022 Rep. Allen was unopposed in both the primary and general election.
I do not really consider him a friend of marijuana reform in the GOP Caucus.
Rep. Allen did call for more “research” and took the time to circulate a letter among his co-workers in 2019. They (other Republicans who signed the letter) sent it on to Wisconsin Congressional and Federal elected officials.
Despite 77% support for 2018 City of Waukesha Medical Marijuana Advisory Referendum, Rep. Scott Allen failed to co-sponsor a bill crafted by the Republican Caucus.
On Rep. Scott Allen’s Official Facebook Page, he commented that he would like to see the tax from marijuana sales be directed towards prevention in the form of abstinence education.
Who is not missing when it comes to bringing a highly controversial marijuana reform organization into Wisconsin? Rep. Scott Allen!
Allen hosted a Zoom meeting on Tuesday June 1st, 2021 with Luke Niforatos, Executive Vice President of SMART Approaches to Marijuana.
In the Fall of 2022 Rep. Allen hosted a Community Engagement Night: Marijuana: “My goal is to expose these false constructs and examine the science and logic behind the marijuana debate,” said Rep. Allen.
“I believe that legalizing medical marijuana is not the best policy at this time,” concluded Rep. Allen. “To legalize a drug without first proving its efficacy and ensuring its safety is, frankly, unwise. The next step should be the reclassification of marijuana federally so that it can be properly studied in order to provide clear evidence to build safe and effective public policy.”
Kevin Reilly (D-Waukesha)
Reilly won the primary in August and will face Allen in November.
Kevin had this to say about cannabis “I believe in decriminalization of Marijuana/Cannabis. I think it should be controlled and taxed as well as regulated for safety.
I view this issue as part of judicial reform as well as a healthcare issue. By criminalizing drug use it only creates a criminal underground that puts the users as well as the public under pressure of a criminal underground economy. I see cannabis as no different from alcohol. It should be decriminalized, given some reasonable guardrails, regulated, taxed and appropriate health care made available for those negatively impacted. Prohibition of alcohol was a disaster. Prohibitions of cannabis is also.
We don’t need to reinvent the wheel when the alcohol laws and taxes can be adjusted to fit Cannabis. Regulate the production, tax the sales, apply the proceeds to harm reduction, abuse treatment and educational costs.”

Samuel D’Amico (D-Waukesha):
D’Amico also ran for election for President of the United States. He will not appear on the ballot for the Democratic convention on August 20, 2024. source After chatting with D’Amico, turns out his Presidential run was kind of joke and it is a long story, but the short story on this candidates view of marijuana is that he does support decriminalization and legalization.

In the event that we end up with divided government in the 2024-25 legislation session, the official formation of The Wisconsin Cannabis Caucus would be a must first step towards reform. The official establishment of this Caucus will represent the growing, bipartisan support in Wisconsin.
Although session as ended we still urge you to contact your elected officials. The top four action alerts are still functionable on The Wisconsin Cannabis Activist Action Network for you immediate use.
