Is there any cannabis related legislation you have sponsored, co-sponsored, or publicly supported? Would you like to provide a brief statement about your stance on cannabis reform?
Marijuana, hemp, and cannabis have been criminalized for far too long. For decades, overly restrictive and unnecessary federal policies have disproportionately impacted Black and Brown communities, saddling too many young people with criminal records for offenses that should never have been treated as serious crimes in the first place. At the same time, Wisconsin continues to maintain an inconsistent approach to substance regulation. While alcohol remains widely available and influential interests continue to shape state policy, cannabis remains illegal, denying consumers, patients, farmers, and entrepreneurs the opportunities available in many neighboring states. Wisconsin’s hemp farmers have also been caught in the middle of this failed approach. Hemp is a versatile crop with significant economic, agricultural, and environmental benefits, yet burdensome regulations and legal uncertainty have made it harder for farmers to succeed and innovate. It’s time for Wisconsin to adopt a commonsense approach: legalize and regulate marijuana responsibly, support our hemp farmers, expunge nonviolent cannabis-related convictions, and ensure that the economic benefits of this industry are shared broadly across our communities.
